The première of the documentary “Interpretation of Images” by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) on Macau’s cinema sector took place at Cinematheque•Passion on Saturday, the bureau said in a statement.
According to a statement on Saturday, in an attempt to raise public awareness of local film and related industries, and to enhance the public’s understanding of the development of the city’s screening industry in the last century, the bureau has produced a documentary entitled “Interpretation of Images”. The statement said that the film focuses on the history of the cinemas in Macau.
The statement said that the public will be able to watch the documentary from tomorrow, while an exhibition about the history and stories of Macau’s century-old cinema development will be running concurrently in a house next to Cinematheque•Passion in Travessa da Paixão. The statement noted that admission to the exhibition is free.
The statement noted that since the opening of Macau’s first cinema, the Victoria Theatre, in 1910, Macau’s cinema sector has developed at the same pace as the world’s cinema industry. The statement noted that in the last century, the city’s cinema sector experienced ups and downs.
The statement said that “Interpretation of Images” was directed by Lao Keng U, adding that the documentary “shows the creative force behind local film and television practitioners,” and presents the evolution of the local cinema sector –its start, golden era, and decline up to its recovery.
Through the interviews with historians and cinema practitioners, the documentary tells the story of the vicissitudes of Macau’s cinema sector in the 20th century and presents the cultural landscape of the city from a fascinating historical perspective, the statement said.

The ticket office is open from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., while the exhibition hall and film information room are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The bureau reminded cinemagoers to wear a facemask, undergo temperature checks, and present a valid health code.
