The Macau Customs Service said in a statement yesterday that it caught three people on Tuesday for smuggling 36 smartphones from Macau to Zhuhai.

According to statement, customs officers caught three non-local men at the Barrier Gate checkpoint, adding that all of them were wearing “loose clothing” and were walking “strangely”. The statement said the customs officers stopped them to investigate, and found a number of smartphones attached to their calves with elastic sports supports. The statement noted that the 36 smartphones were confiscated from the trio.

The statement pointed out that the three smugglers are aged 31 to 53, adding that they violated the External Trade Law with each facing a fine of up to 50,000 patacas.

The Macau Customs Service urged residents not to give into greediness and engage in smuggling. The statement said if anyone witnesses smuggling, residents should call 2896 5001 or email info@customs.gov.mo to report the case.
