A local man who has the habit of wearing women’s clothing was arrested on Sunday for stealing goods worth about 2,000 patacas from two convenience stores in San Kio district six times between mid-January and last week, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong told a regular press conference yesterday.
The 35-year-old suspect surnamed Ip told the police that he is a part-time music teacher.
According to Lam, an employee of a convenience store in Rua de Brás da Rosa reported to the police on Friday morning that colleagues had discovered that a pack of beer cans and two plastic boxes put near the entrance of the store had vanished in the early hours of that day.
After scrutinising CCTV footage, PSP officers discovered that items such as about 100 cans of beer, a bottle of red wine and a box of chocolate were stolen by the same man six times between mid-January and last Friday in two convenience stores in Rua de Brás da Rosa and Estrada do Repouso respectively, involving a total loss of around 2,000 patacas. PSP officers discovered that the man was wearing women’s clothes each time he went to the convenience store to steal, according to Lam.
Lam said the officers arrested Ip, who was also wearing women’s clothes at that time, in Rua da Alegria on Sunday, and seized at his home the women’s clothes he wore when stealing goods in the two convenience stores. Under questioning, Ip confessed to the serial theft case. He blamed alcohol addiction and greed for his criminal behaviour. He also told the police that he started his habit of wearing women’s clothing in 2005, and insisted that he did not intend to evade the police investigation by wearing women’s clothes.
Ip has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft charges, according to Lam.
