The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) said in a statement yesterday that it had received 2.2 million red envelopes (“lai see”), and that 410,000 of them are reuseable.

According to the statement, during Chinese New Year the bureau hosted a “Recycle red envelope is so easy” event and set up over 840 recycling spots all over Macau. The statement noted that the event ended on March 6, stressing that it collected 2.2 million red envelopes, 410,000 of which are reuseable.

The statement said that the bureau worked with a raft of groups and associations and would distribute the reusable red envelopes to residents for Chinese New Year next year. The statement also said that some of the red envelopes would be used for workshops or activities, pointing out that the ones that could not be reused would be recycled into new red envelopes.

The statement said that in the future the bureau would continue to promote the idea of “reduce, reuse, recycle” on social media platforms, and would also install more recycling bins at different buildings.
