Cheong Man Fai, who heads the Youth Department of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), told reporters yesterday that the new social media platforms give youths “easier access” to meet “friends”.
Cheong made the remarks yesterday at a press conference after this year’s first plenary meeting of the government-appointed Youth Affairs Committee at the bureau.
Cheong said that social workers attending the meeting briefed DSEDJ officials about the popular social media that are used nowadays, adding that youths probably do not use Facebook as often, instead they are using other social media platforms that allow them to meet someone by “shaking” their phones and finding people nearby.
Cheong said that youths often easily agree to “weird” requests after adding a “friend” on social media platforms.
Moreover, according to a statement provided by the bureau on the sidelines of yesterday’s press conference, during the meeting DSEDJ officials also talked about the “2020 Youth Award” and a presentation called “Walk with Love – Concern Group for Youths’ Mental Health”.
The statement said that the period for “2020 Youth Award” nominations ended last month, adding that there are seven nominations for the “Youth Activities Award”, five nominations for “Civil Education Award” and one nomination for “Youth Service Award”.
Meanwhile, the meeting also discussed the “Walk with Love – Concern Group for Youths’ Mental Health”, which was established in January. The statement said that the concern group decided to implement procedures to help youths’ mental health development. The statement pointed out that the group plans to increase the functionality of family education, increase awareness of its “Life Line” call-in counselling service and youth online counselling service, and collaborate with schools and social groups.
