The Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau (ISAF) has ordered the recall of a batch of a calcium supplement after tests found discrepancies in its vitamin D content, urging residents to stop using the affected product, according to a statement by the bureau on Friday.
According to the statement, the product involved is “DIETARY SUPPLEMENT NUTRA CALCIUM 600 PLUS VITAMIN D 200 IU” (batch number 51194), manufactured by Earth’s Creation USA.
Laboratory testing revealed that the actual vitamin D content in the batch exceeded the labelled amount of 200 IU, though it did not surpass internationally recognised daily safety limits, the statement said, adding that the product was also found to contain trace amounts of ethanol and ethyl acetate residues, within acceptable standards.
As the product did not meet registered quality specifications, authorities instructed importers to recall the batch and advised residents to immediately stop taking it, the statement said, noting that the supplement, an over-the-counter product used to support calcium and vitamin D intake, had been supplied to multiple healthcare facilities, including the Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), private hospitals, clinics, community pharmacies, and veterinary service providers.
All relevant institutions have been notified to cease distribution and use, the statement said, adding that the affected batch had also been dispensed through community pharmacies under agreements with the Health Bureau (SSM).
Supply has since been halted, and emergency measures have been activated to procure alternative products with the same ingredients and dosage for affected patients, the statement noted, underlining that details of replacement arrangements will be announced later.
Residents can contact the pharmacy department of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre on 8390 3710 during office hours for enquiries, while those who obtained the product through other healthcare providers or pharmacies are advised to consult the relevant institutions for follow-up arrangements on 8598 3285 during office hours as well.
According to the Health Bureau, residents are advised to maintain adequate nutrient intake through a balanced diet or fortified milk products while discontinuing use of the supplement, and to seek medical advice if needed.
