Sands China Ltd. said in a statement yesterday that it had hosted a seminar for staff members and local youths about the recent sessions of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy yesterday at The Parisian Macao in Cotai.

The statement underlined that the aim of the seminar was to help participants develop an in-depth understanding of the spirit of the NPC and CPPCC National Committee sessions, the nation’s 14th Five-Year Plan, and the implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle in Macau.

According to the statement, Sands invited NPC deputy and Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations (Kai Fong) President Ng Siu Lai; NPC deputy and Macao Daily News Director Lok Po; as well as CPPCC National Committee member and Administrative Committee of the Macau Foundation (FM) President Wu Zhiliang to talk about the spirit of the “Two Sessions” and the sustained implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” in Macau.

The statement noted that nearly 460 people attended the seminar, including Sands China management staff and young people from the community.

The statement said that Ng highlighted some key points of the nation’s 14th Five-Year Plan, and suggested that central government restore the e-visa procedure for the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) as soon as possible to boost Macau’s economic recovery. Meanwhile, the statement said that Lok suggested that Macau deepen cooperation with the mainland, especially in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Hengqin, in order to facilitate economic diversification.

The statement also pointed out that Wu suggested that Macau develop a systematic approach with regard to education and training to cultivate the spirit of “Loving the Country and Loving Macau.” The statement also said that Wu encouraged local youths to equip themselves with the required professional skills and enhance their competitiveness to embrace the opportunities offered by the Greater Bay Area, so as to integrate themselves into the national development.

Sands China Ltd. President Wilfred Wong Ying-wai addressed the seminar saying, “The destinies of our nation and Macau are tied together. Therefore, it is important that our team members fully understand key topics such as the strategic significance of the nation’s 14th Five-Year Plan for Macau’s integration into the development of the country. With the steady and sustained implementation of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ in Macau, we are confident that Macau will build on its own advantages. We hope the insights shared by today’s [yesterday’s] distinguished speakers can help team members contribute to the national development while propelling the city’s economic diversification.”

Wong, who holds several honorary doctorates, is a former NPC deputy.
