The “Wynn Cup” Qingdao-Macau International Offshore Race 2021 will take place from May 10 to 30, setting sail in Qingdao en route to Macau via Xiamen, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, Wynn said in a statement yesterday.

The statement noted that the entire race will cover 1,200-nautical miles. The statement also said that the race, the first time that Macau and Qingdao have co-organised such a race, will provide space for a new development model featured by “Sports + Tourism + Exhibition” through cross-section cooperation on hosting sports events for a new roadmap to develop a maritime economy in Macau.

According to the statement, with the theme, “Sail to Celebrate 100 Years of Youth and Progress”, and the slogan of “Vitality, Fashion, Openness, Unity”, the “Wynn Cup” Qingdao – Macau International Offshore Race 2021 will be a series of events for exchanges in the sports, leisure, culture, trade and business sectors.

The statement pointed out that Qingdao is the venue for the China-Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Demonstration Zone for Local Economic and Trade Cooperation, whereas Shenzhen is the pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The statement also underlined that Xiamen, Shenzhen and Zhuhai are the nation’s earliest special economic zones. Zhoushan port in Ningbo, known as “the largest port in the world”, is where the “Silk Road Economic Belt” meets “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”.

The statement stressed that the “Wynn Cup” Qingdao – Macau International Offshore Race 2021 will be an important international sports event since Macau’s official maritime area has been extended by the central government to 85 square kilometres, adding that it is also the first time that Qingdao and Macau have worked together on a 20-day-water sports event that goes through three special economic zones, namely Xiamen, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai.

According to the statement, as the pioneering event for the development of Macau’s marine economy via coastal tourism, the race provides space for a new development model featured by “Sports + Tourism + Exhibition” as a result of cross-sector cooperation.

The statement also said that for the safety and smoothness of the race, the organising committee has adopted various measures, including signing the “Qingdao Macao International Offshore Race 2021 Cooperation Agreement” with the Qingdao Municipal Sports Bureau concerning sailing cruisers and equipment, and course setting and crew arrangements. The statement underlined that a strict COVID-19 prevention and control plan will be adopted to ensure the health and safety of the participants and create a safe environment for the race.

Qingdao (“Green Island”) is world-famous for its Tsingtao beer and its annual beer festival. The city was administered by Germany between 1898 and 1914. It has a population of 9 million.
