A 67-year-old man was arrested on Friday for stealing 10,000 yuan that he found in a local street last Tuesday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The local jobless suspect is surnamed Lei.
According to Wong, a man reported to the police last Tuesday that he had lost 10,000 yuan (12,260 patacas) in cash. He told the police that earlier that day he had parked his scooter in Avenida do General Castelo Branco en route to a nearby bank branch to deposit 20,000 yuan into his account. When he arrived at the bank he discovered that the zip of his bag containing the cash was open and 10,000 yuan had gone. He suspected that the money might have fallen out of his bag while he was walking to the bank. He walked back the way he had come from to look for the money but couldn’t find any so he decided to report the case to the police.
Thanks to CCTV footage, PSP officers discovered that a man walking near the bank picked up the money when the victim was inside. The officers located Lei and arrested him on Friday in Rua da Ribeira do Patane. Lei admitted to committing the crime out of greed. The officers found the stolen 10,000 yuan at Lei’s home in the same street.
Lei has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft by finding charge, according to Wong.
