A mainland man was arrested on Friday for arranging his former wife’s bogus marriage to a local man 10 years ago so that she and their two sons could obtain Macau ID cards, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lai Chio Hong said at a regular press conference on Monday.
The 47-year-old suspect surnamed Qiu told the police that he works in the insurance sector.
According to Lai, the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) requested the Judiciary Police last year to follow up on an investigation into a suspected sham marriage case.
PJ officers discovered that Qiu had “hired” a local man surnamed Lo to marry his ex-wife surnamed Zhang in 2011 in order for his wife and their twin sons, who are now 22 years old, to obtain Macau ID cards, which they received in 2015.
Lo and Zhang maintained their fake marriage until the Judiciary Police discovered the bogus marital relationship last December, after which both were transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for follow-up investigation.
Lai said that Qiu was arrested on Friday when he entered Macau via the Barrier Gate checkpoint. Under questioning, Qiu denied having arranged the fake marriage. However, the police had gathered evidence that Qiu had paid Lo 40,000 yuan (48,940 patacas at yesterday’s exchange rate) as “remuneration” for the fake marriage arrangement, Lai said.
Qiu was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Saturday, facing document forgery charges, according to Lai.
