An event by nine local artists titled “Découpage Art Exhibition” is on display at the 10 Fantasia gallery.

The event is being co-hosted by 10 Fantasia – A Creative Industries Incubator and the St. Lazarus Church District Creative Industries Promotion Association. The exhibition is sponsored by the public Macau Foundation (FM).

According to a statement by the gallery, a total of 55 works by nine artists – Continuous Improvement and Development Programme tutor and curator Maggie Ng Kam Lin and students Lam In San, Wong Cheng I, Carla Lam Ka Lai, Ario Pong Sio U, Natalia Yan Vun Fong, Leong Mio Kun, Dorothy Wai Man Wan, Angela U Ka I are displayed at this exhibition.

The creation of the exhibits was based on the theme of the programme’s course titled “Art integrates into life, promotes environmental protection, and adds colour to life”.

The artworks were created with the collage of materials and other elements using découpage techniques.

“The nine artists hope to express the joy of sharing their learning and creative achievements with the public through this exhibition,” the statement said.

According to Wikipedia, découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements. Commonly, an object like a small box or an item of furniture is covered with cutouts from magazines or from purpose-manufactured paper. Each layer is sealed with varnish (often multiple coats) until the “stuck on” appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work. The traditional technique uses 30 to 40 layers of varnish which are then sanded to a polished finish, the Wikipedia article points out.

Maggie Ng, the curator and tutor of the exhibition, used to be a course tutor for the Continuing Education Development Programme established by the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ). Ng loves art, particularly collage art. The statement did not mention her current activities.

“Découpage” is French for “cutting”.

The exhibition runs until April 27 in rooms, C01 and C02, at 10 Fantasia, which opens daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (closed in Mondays), at 10 Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro. Admission is free.
