A Mongolian man was nabbed for stealing skincare products and perfumes worth 7,800 patacas from a shop in Cotai last week, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said at a regular press conference yesterday.
Moreover, the Public Security Police found a Mongolian female overstayer by chance when they arrested the suspect. Two other suspects, a Turkmen and an Indonesian, were arrested for aiding and abetting the woman’s overstay.
The 50-year-old theft suspect is a Mongolian surnamed Sharavjamts. The two other male suspects involved in aiding and abetting the Mongolian woman’s overstay are a 31-year-old Turkmen surnamed Asadov who works in customer service at a local hotel and a 41-year-old surnamed Michael, an Indonesian who works as a hotel employee.
According to Cheong, a staff member of a shop in Cotai reported to the police on Wednesday that based on the shop’s CCTV footage an eye cream kit worth 2,400 patacas had been stolen by two men. The Public Security Police (PSP) scrutinised CCTV footage from the shop and nearby and later located the two men. PSP officers arrested Sharavjamts at his home in Taipa on Thursday. The officers seized the eye cream kit and discovered five bottles of perfume in the flat which it was suspected were stolen from the same shop. A staff member of the shop later confirmed that the perfumes were the shop’s products worth 5,400 patacas. Sharavjamts admitted to the shoplifting. He told the police that he went to the shop with a friend who came from his hometown in Mongolia and claimed that he acted as cover for his friend when the latter was stealing the items. Cheong said the other suspect was on the run at the time of the press conference.
Meanwhile, the Public Security Police (PSP) discovered a 24-year-old Mongolian female overstayer in Sharavjamts’s flat. The woman told the police that she met a man on the internet and paid Michael HK$5,000 to stay in the flat. Cheong said Asadov only assisted Michael by collecting the rent. The Public Security Police told Michael and Asadov to report to a police station last week. Under questioning, both admitted the crime of aiding and abetting an overstayer.
Cheong did not explain who owns or rents the flat and how many people live there.
Sharavjamts, Asadov and Michael have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). Sharavjamts faces a theft charge while Asadov and Michael each face a charge of aiding and abetting overstay, according to Cheong.
