A local man was arrested on Monday for stealing 1,500 patacas that someone had left in an ATM last November, Public Security Police (PJ) spokesman Lam Leong said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

The 85-year-old jobless suspect is surnamed Cheong.

According to Lam, a male mainlander in his twenties reported to the Public Security Police on November 17 that he forgot to take the 1,500 patacas that he had withdrawn from an ATM in Rua do Visconde Paço de Arcos on November 12. When he returned to the ATM the cash had vanished.

After checking CCTV footage, PSP officers identified Cheong and told him to report to a police station on Monday. Cheong admitted to stealing the money “out of greed” and said that he had spent all the stolen money.

Cheong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) where he faces a theft-by-finding charge, according to Lam.
