Local residents' jobless rate rises to 4 pct

Local residents' unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 4.0 percent in the January-March employment survey period compared to the previous period (December 2020-February 2021), the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced today. 

According to a DSEC statement, Macau's general unemployment rate remained unchanged at 2.9 percent. 

The general unemployment rate comprises local residents and non-resident workers (NRWs). 

Local residents' underemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to 4.8 percent. 

The labour force living in Macau totalled 396,600, while the labour force participation rate stood at 69.9 percent. 

Total employment was 384,900 and the number of employed residents stood at 281,400, down by 2,000 and 1,200 respectively from the previous survey period. 

The number of unemployed increased by 100 from the previous period to 11,600. Among the unemployed looking for a new job, most were previously employed by gaming and junket operators and the construction sector. 

The number of the underemployed rose by 1,100 to 19,200, most of them working in the gaming/junket and construction sectors. 

Macau residents and NRWs who worked in Macau but lived outside the special administrative region were estimated at 83,300. Macau's labour force comprising those living in and outside of Macau stood at 479,900, a drop of 2,100 from the previous period. 

Meanwhile, the median monthly employment earnings of the employed in the first quarter increased by 300 patacas quarter-to-quarter to 15,000 patacas (US$1,876), with those employed by casino and junket operators and the construction sector earning 20,000 patacas and 15,000 patacas respectively. 

Local residents' median earnings grew by 1,000 patacas to 20,000 patacas.
