Macau's gross gaming revenues rose 1,014.4 percent year-on-year to 8.4 billion patacas (US$1.05 billion) in April, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announced today.
Last month's huge growth indicated a strong recovery from last year's casino takings. However, April's revenues were still much lower than those in April 2019.
In April 2020, Macau's gross gaming revenues stood at just 754 million patacas. In April 2019, the gross gaming revenues reached a whopping 23.58 billion patacas.
Macau confirmed its first COVID-19 case on January 22 last year.
Month-to-month, April's gross gaming revenues rose by just 1.1 percent.
In the first four months of the year, the gross gaming revenues increased by 2.6 percent to 32.04 billion patacas.
At the end of the first quarter, Macau's six gaming operators (SJM, Galaxy, MGM, Melco, Sands, and Wynn) owned 41 casinos. However, the operations of four of SJM's 22 casinos were suspended at that time, according to the gaming inspectorate.
At the end of March, the gaming sector operated 6,092 gaming tables and 9,404 slot machines. Compared to the end of 2019, the sector's numbers of gaming tables and slot machines were down by 47 percent and 9.6 percent respectively.
