A total of 167,000 visitors came to Macau during the mainland’s five-day May Day Holiday (1 – 5 May 2021), the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said in a statement on Friday.

According to the statement, Macau recorded the new highest daily record of 45,000 visitor arrivals during the May Day holiday period with a daily average of 33,000 visitors between May 1 and May 5. The statement pointed out that the average hotel occupancy rate during the holiday was 83.2 percent.

The statement noted that 156,000 of the visitor arrivals came from the mainland, nearly 92 percent of the total.

The statement noted that the daily average number of visitor arrivals during the 5-day holiday rose by 158.2 percent compared with the Chinese New Year “Golden Week” holiday in 2021, and increased by 25.4 percent compared with the figure in April.

According to the statement, local hotels reported an average occupancy rate of 83.2 percent during the holiday. The occupancy rate of 3-star hotels reached 86.6 percent, while and 5-star hotels recorded an 84.8 percent average occupancy rate. The statement also underlined that the average hotel occupancy rate was close to the corresponding figure in 2019 at the level of 96.6 percent

The statement pointed out that the average room rate for hotels and guesthouses was about 1,263 patacas during the holiday. The statement highlighted that this was an increase of 1.7 percent compared with that of the Chinese New Year “Golden Week” holiday earlier this year. The statement said that the average room rates for 5-star and 4-star hotels were around 1,475 patacas and 885 patacas respectively.

The statement noted that MGTO conducted a total of 28 inspections during May 1-5, targeting border checkpoints, tourist attractions, as well as hotels for their implementation of COVID-19 pandemic preventive measures. The statement noted that no irregularities were found.

The statement underlined that MGTO has deployed online and offline promotional initiatives targeting the mainland visitor market with the aim of highlighting Macau’s image as a safe and quality destination, “spurring a steady upward trend of visitor arrivals.”

The statement further emphasised that MGTO will devise careful planning of tourism products and destination promotion in the mainland through different channels and initiatives to encourage more mainland visitors to explore Macau and spend in local communities in order to stimulate the revival of the economy.
