A man was arrested last Saturday for attacking his wife and daughter at their home in Fai Chi Kei district and throwing an incense burner and a laptop out of the window when he was drunk earlier that night, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Erica Cheong Im Sim said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The 45-year-old local jobless suspect is surnamed Lau.
According to Cheong, the Public Security Police received a report from a resident on Saturday night that some objects had been thrown from a residential building in Rua da Doca Seca, hitting a vehicle below. PSP officers arrived at the scene and found an incense burner on the pavement and a damaged laptop on the road. A commercial vehicle parked in the area was damaged by glass shards.
The driver of the vehicle had been informed of the damage and told the police at the scene that he would take legal action on behalf of the company that owns the vehicle.
After about 10 minutes, the Public Security Police received another report about a family dispute in a flat on an upper floor of a residential building in the same street. PSP officers went to the flat to investigate and discovered that a window pane in the living room was broken and assumed that it was related to the case of the damaged vehicle. The officers noticed that Lau was intoxicated and emotional. He was taken to the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre for treatment.
Cheong said that under questioning, Lau admitted that he drank alcohol during dinner that night. He told the police that after he got home, he quarrelled with his wife and “lost confidence” in worshipping Buddha so he threw a Buddha statue and other religious items onto the floor. He claimed that he could not remember what happened later as he was too drunk.
According to Cheong, the investigating PSP officers noticed that both Lau’s 45-year-old wife and his daughter, who is under the age of 10, had sustained injuries.
Lau’s wife complained about pain in her waist while his daughter sustained minor injuries, Cheong said.
As the incident involved domestic violence, PSP officers have transferred the case to the Judiciary Police for follow-up investigation.
Meanwhile, the Public Security Police are continuing their investigation into the property damage caused by falling objects, Cheong said.
Lau has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of causing property damage. The case of alleged domestic violence is still being investigated by the Judiciary Police, according to Cheong.
