A local man was arrested for frequently beating his girlfriend and two of their three daughters, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a press conference on Friday.

The 58-year-old local suspect surnamed Chan told the police that he owns a decorating company. His girlfriend is a mainlander in her thirties who holds a family visit permit. The couple have three daughters who are aged nine, eight and three.

According to the spokesman, the Public Security Police (PSP) referred a domestic violence case to the Judiciary Police last Wednesday according to which a man allegedly beat his girlfriend and physically punished the older two of their three daughters. The spokesman said the woman met Chan in 2010 and they became lovers. They didn’t marry in spite of the fact that they have three daughters. The woman has been staying in Macau with a family visit permit.

The spokesman said the woman told the police that Chan had become irritable due to poor business after the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic. He frequently beat her for trivial family matters and also slapped the two elder daughters with his hand or slippers over discipline issues. In the evening of May 14, Chan asked the eldest daughter to massage his back with her feet. Chan felt pain and reacted by slapping his daughter on the arms and legs. Chan’s girlfriend tried to stop him but Chan reacted by slapping her.

According to the spokesman, Chan’s girlfriend secretly installed a CCTV camera in their home last Tuesday for the safety of her family. However, Chan discovered the camera the following day and he again slapped his girlfriend while arguing about the camera. Chan’s girlfriend took her three daughters to a police station in the afternoon to report the case to the police.

The spokesman said PJ officers later went to their home in central Taipa on the same day and arrested him. Chan admitted to the crime of domestic violence. A medical examination confirmed that the woman sustained injuries to her head and left eye.

Chan has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing domestic violence charges, according to the spokesman.
