A photography exhibition titled “Dimension” (尋覓現象) by local artist Alex Chao Io Chong (仇耀中), organised by the Macau Association of International Contemporary Art, and sponsored by the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, is being held at the hall.
According to a statement provided by Chao, he graduated from the Macau Polytechnic Institute (IPM) with a bachelor’s degree in Visual Art in 2012. He is the president of the Macau Association of International Contemporary Art. Chao, who was born in Macau, worked as a photographer for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Macau, as well as the photography supervisor at the Macau Polytechnic Institute’s School of Arts for many years. He has more than 30 years of experience in photography, visual art creation and education.
The exhibition displays 30 of Chao’s recent photographs.
In his statement, Chao says he believes that his photography is not static. “Starting with an image and ending as a work of photography, the chemistry involved produces wonderful changes, creating endless stories to attract the audience’s attention and thoughts,” Chao underlines.
Crystal Fong Mei Han (馮美嫻), curator of the exhibition, says in a separate statement about the exhibition that Chao particularly likes photographs in black-and-white tones as he believes that black and white are wonderful colours as sometimes good photographs may be damaged due to colour inconsistency.
With the transition from the film camera era to the digital camera, Chao’s photographic works are also connected with contemporary art, expressing his feelings more directly and truthfully to deliver his views on civil society, humanity and visual arts, according to Fong’s statement.
Chao says in remarks on the exhibition’s invitation card, “My photography style is ever-changing, ‘Taking an image, freezing a moment.’ Photography is about searching for something interesting in an ordinary life thus to reflect on the small things in life.”
The exhibition runs until Sunday at the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall at 1 Rua de Silva Mendes. The hall is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (except Tuesdays & closes at 4 p.m. on Sundays). Admission is free.
As part of the government’s COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures, all visitors entering the venue have to wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health code.
