Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said during the Legislative Assembly’s Q&A plenary session yesterday that her office plans to revamp the walking routes around the city in alignment with the community’s tourism resources and specialties.
Senna Fernandes said that she plans to revamp the current eight walking routes and only focus on four major areas – central district, São Lázaro district, Taipa and Coloane. She elaborated that the central district covers places such as the Inner Harbour area, Praça de Ponte e Horta, Pagode do Patane, Rua de Cinco de Outubro, and Rua dos Ervanários.
Senna Fernandes said that her office plans to revamp the central district walking route and combine it with a boat tour of the Inner Harbour in order to promote the community’s development.
Senna Fernandes noted that in 2019 a total of 18,000 people went on the boat tour, adding that in 2020 around 48,000 people signed up for it. She said this showed that locals are attracted by the boat tour
According to the MGTO website, as part of its comprehensive upgrade of the ‘Step Out, Experience Macau’s Communities’ activity in 2015, the office launched four new walking tour routes in February 2015. In addition to the four existing routes which have been reconfigured for more variety and interest, the newly introduced routes brought the total to eight walking tour routes tailored to explore Macau’s very different neighbourhoods as much as possible.
The routes are designed to balance visitor trends around Macau and foster community tourism, according to the website.
