Over 6,400 traffic accidents recorded Jan-June, up 11.61 pct: police

The Public Security Police (PSP) have announced that they recorded 6,479 traffic accidents in the first half of this year, indicating a year-on-year growth of 11.61 percent from 5,805 in the first six months of last year.

The daily average of traffic accidents between January and June amounted to 35.8.

Five fatal traffic accidents were recorded, according to statistics on the PSP website.

In terms of people fined for jaywalking, i.e., pedestrians crossing the road illegally, the PSP statistics showed a year-on-year increase of 50 percent from 584 cases in the first half of last year to 926 this year.

In the first six months of this year, the Public Security Police recorded more than 362,000 cases of breaching the city’s road traffic law, resulting in fines totalling over 82 million patacas, a rise of about 18 percent year on year. Among the cases, according to the PSP statistics, 26 drivers were fined for using their car illegally as a taxi, showing a rapid growth of about 333 percent year on year from the just six cases in the first six months of last year.

The Public Security Police recorded more than 334,000 cases of illegal parking in the first half of this year, a year-on-year growth of around 18 percent from the about 284,000 cases between January and June last year.

In terms of taxi violations, 194 cabbies were given penalties in the first six months of this year, an increase of about 193 percent year on year, of which nine and 72 taxi drivers were fined for overcharging and refusal to accept a passenger respectively.
