Power utility CEM announced yesterday that it has partnered with the Macau Youth Association and the Macau Youth Volunteers Association to launch the “Youth Community Service Project”.

According to a CEM statement, the aim of the project is “to raise awareness among young people about issues such as environmental protection and care for the most vulnerable in our community.”

This month, the statement pointed out, 80 young volunteers from both associations will participate in four activities organised by CEM, aiming to encourage young people to be “more sustainable in their actions”.

The first activity took place last Saturday when 20 volunteers from the Macau Youth Volunteers Association and CEM team members visited animal protection group ANIMA’s shelter.

The visit “aimed to raise awareness among young people about the importance of taking care of animals, conveying the message that animals should not be abandoned or mistreated, and getting to know what is being done in Macau about animal protection,” the statement said, adding that during the visit the volunteers had the opportunity to walk some of the shelter’s dogs.

ANIMA Board of Directors President Billy Chan Hon Keong welcomed the volunteers to the shelter.

Meanwhile, 20 volunteers from the Macau Youth Federation will participate in a recycling programme organised by the Macau for Waste Reduction group on Saturday.

On June 19, another 20 volunteers from the Macau Youth Federation will accompany 20 seniors with low mobility referred by Macau Caritas “to spend a joyful afternoon together,” the statement said, adding that on June 27, 20 volunteers from the Macau Youth Volunteers Association will participate in an urban farming activity promoted by the Mighty Green group, “where the youngsters will have the chance of learn how to grow their own organic food.”
