The Legislative Assembly Electoral Affairs Commission (CAEAL) announced in a statement last night that 22 lists have submitted registered voters’ signatures endorsing their candidacy for the upcoming direct election.

Four years ago, 25 lists had submitted nomination signatures for their direct election candidacy. One of the 25 lists backed out before polling day.

Yesterday was the deadline for the submission of the nominations for the Legislative Assembly (AL) direct and indirect elections, which will take place on September 12.

However, of the 22 groups, two have meanwhile withdrawn from taking part in the direct election, according to the statement.

5 lists for indirect election

According to the statement, five lists have submitted registered voters’ signatures endorsing their candidacy for the indirect election.

The statement said that the commission has confirmed the validity of the candidacy of six of the 20 lists for the direct election. The validity of the remaining 18 lists is yet to be verified.

The 33-member Macau Legislative Assembly (AL) comprises 14 deputies directly elected by universal suffrage, 12 deputies indirectly elected by association representatives and seven deputies appointed by the chief executive after the direct and indirect elections.

Macau’s elections are based on the proportional representation system.
