SJM’s new Chinese name stresses the company’s entertainment and integrated resorts segments.

Directly translated, the new name – 澳娛綜合度假股份有限公司 – means “Macau Entertainment Integrated Resorts Company Limited”.

The new name was revealed by Hong Kong-listed SJM Holdings Limited in a “voluntary announcement – change of name of principal subsidiary” on Wednesday.

The Board of SJM Holdings Limited said it was pleased to announce that the name of its principal subsidiary, Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A., has been changed as follows: SJM Resorts, S.A. in Portuguese, 澳娛綜合度假股份有限公司 in Chinese, and SJM Resorts, Limited in English.

Sociedade de Jogos de Macau is Portuguese for “Macau Gaming Company”.

According to the statement, “the Board believes that the new name better reflects the group’s prominent position in the tourism and leisure business and its dedication to the development and operation of integrated resorts in Macau.”

The statement underlined that SJM Resorts “will soon open its newest flagship Grand Lisboa Palace integrated resort in Cotai, extending the traditions of its forerunners Hotel Lisboa and Grand Lisboa, and setting a new milestone in Macau’s development.”

The statement was signed by Daisy Ho Chiu Fung, chairperson and executive director of SJM Holdings Limited.

According to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), SJM owns 22 of Macau’s 41 casinos. However, the operations of four of the SJM casinos were suspended at the end of the first quarter of this year.

Colloquially, SJM was previously known in Cantonese as “Ou Bok” (“Macau Gaming”). Following its name change, it is colloquially known in Cantonese as “Ou Yue” (“Macau Entertainment”).
