A 68-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for stealing a diamond ring worth 80,000 patacas he found in a supermarket on Saturday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Erica Cheong Im Sim said at a regular press briefing yesterday.

The suspect surnamed Cheong works in a restaurant.

According to the spokesperson, a woman reported to the Public Security Police on Saturday that she had lost her diamond ring when shopping in a supermarket in the city centre earlier that night. She returned to the supermarket but was unable to find it. PSP officers scrutinised CCTV footage from the supermarket and nearby area. Thanks to the footage the police were able to identify the suspect, and Cheong was arrested in a restaurant in Zape on Sunday night. PSP officers found the ring on Cheong who admitted that he stole it out of greed and claimed that he kept the ring with him because he liked to look at it.

Cheong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft by finding charge, according to the spokeswoman.
