An Indonesian domestic helper was arrested last week for stealing her employer’s and his father’s jewellery worth 200,000 patacas and pawning them, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a regular press briefing on Monday.

The 38-year-old maid surnamed Farida started working for the victim at the end of 2019.

According to Chan, a man reported to the Judiciary Police on Friday that his wife’s jewellery worth 120,000 patacas kept in their home in Iao Hon district had vanished. He suspected that his maid had stolen the valuables. PJ officers discovered that the maid had 36 records of pawning jewellery since June 2020. Under questioning, Farida admitted to stealing her employer’s jewellery. She also admitted that when she went to the flat of her employer’s father, which is in the same building, she used fake jewellery to cover up her theft after stealing genuine items worth 80,000 patacas.

Farida told the police that she had pawned jewellery for about 100,000 patacas and remitted the proceeds to her hometown.

Chan said the Judiciary Police retrieved 11 items of jewellery from various pawn shops, some of which belonged to the victim, and the Judiciary Police suspect that the remaining items pawned by Farida involve other theft cases.

Farida has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office, facing charges of fraud and aggravated theft, according to Chan.
