A 73-year-old man was arrested on Friday for stealing a local teenage girl’s smartphone worth 2,200 patacas in May, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Leong said at a press briefing yesterday.
The local jobless suspect is surnamed Cheang.
According to Lam, the girl, accompanied by her father, reported to the police on May 4 that she had lost her smartphone which she put on a bench while resting earlier that day in the sitting-out area in Alameda da Tranquilidade. She returned to the area after about 10 minutes to look for her phone but it wasn’t there.
PSP officers scrutinised the neighbourhood’s CCTV footage and identified Cheang as the suspect. PSP officers arrested him in the neighbourhood on Friday. Under questioning, Cheang admitted to stealing the phone “out of greed”. At the time of his arrest, Cheang had the phone with him and handed over it to the police, Lam said.
Cheang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft by finding charge, according to Lam.
