Enrolment for the ninth edition of the annual “MGM Junior Lion Dance Summer Class” opened yesterday until June 4, aiming to enable local children aged between five and eight to deepen their cultural confidence and enhance their physical fitness and self-discipline by dabbling in the long-standing Chinese cultural sport, the resort operator said in a recent statement.
The statement said that those who are interested in joining the class may fill in the application form on MGM’s official website by June 4, and submit it along with a valid copy of their ID card and medical report issued from a registered doctor, adding that a total of 80 applicants will be selected via computer ballot.
According to the statement, during the seven-week training programme, which will commence on July 10, co-organised by MGM and Mak Chi Leong Dragon & Lion Dance Association Macau, with the support of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), trainees will learn about the history of lion dance, basic movements, the use of different props and musical instruments that go with the dance.
Those who complete the programme will perform and show off their dance moves at the graduation ceremony, the statement said, adding that graduates with an outstanding performance may continue improving their lion dance techniques in the “MGM Lion Dance Training Programme”.
Since its first launch in 2015, the summer programme has attracted over 460 participants, the statement noted.
