A Public Security Police (PSP) statement said yesterday that a rubbish bin was set on fire in the restricted staff area of Venetian resorts, while the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said in another statement last night that a rubbish bin at Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP) had been on fire.

According to the PSP statement, the Fire Services Bureau reported the fire to the police at 2 a.m. yesterday, noting that a fire in a rubbish bin was found by a Venetian staff member in the restricted staff area on the third floor. The statement underlined that the cause of the fire was “unusual”, urging the police to follow-up on the case.

The PSP said in the statement that after they arrived to the scene, they found a large green rubbish bin was burnt, and neither cigarette ends nor combustion material were found in it. The PSP statement also said that no one was injured. The police said that they suspected arson and has transferred the case to another law enforcement agency to follow-up.

Meanwhile, the CB statement said yesterday that a medium sized rubbish bin was found on fire in the Grand Lisboa Palace basement next to the lift. The statement said that a security staff member from the resort put out the blaze with a dry powder type extinguisher. The statement noted that 990 staff members had been evacuated during the fire and returned to the resort after the fire had been put out.

According to the CB statement, a piece of cardboard sized 0.3x0.3 metres was found burnt in the rubbish bin. The firefighters said they suspected that a person left a kindling item behind, which caused the fire. The statement underlined that the resort decided not to press charges.
