As a tropical depression will move closest to Macau tonight and early tomorrow morning, according to the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), there is a “low to medium” possibility of hoisting Signal No. 3, a SMG statement said yesterday.

According to the statement, at 11 p.m. yesterday the tropical depression was estimated to be about 230 kilometres southwest of Macau near the western coast Guangdong. The weather station forecast that it the storm will intensify and move eastwards towards the northern part of the South China Sea, bringing unsettled weather to the coast of Guangdong. The statement also said that it expects occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms, and that the wind will also intensify. The statement urged the public to pay close attention to the change in weather and the latest tropical cyclone information.

The statement said that as the storm does not coincide with the high tide in the next few days, the possibility of storm surge flooding is low. However, the statement said that the public should still be alert to flooding that could be caused by torrential rain.
