The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday that it will hold “THE SHADOW OF KATANA•GUNS•SWORDS—Martial Arts, Samurai and Western Film Festival” from August to September, featuring a collection of 25 classic films.
According to the statement, the film-fest will be held at Cinematheque•Passion from Friday to September 18. During the festival, 25 films will be screened, consisting of five categories, namely “The Aesthetics of Violence”, “Literary Flavours in Action Films”, “Western Guns and Eastern Swords”, “Heroines” and “Special Screenings”, which aim to enable spectators to review classical films. The festival also aims to introduce outstanding pieces to young viewers from novel and interesting perspectives.
The statement noted that the films include “Harakiri” directed by famous Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi, which won the Cannes Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize, and “Once Upon a Time in the West”, an epic Spaghetti Western produced in Italy.
Moreover, the statement said that two post-screening talks will be held during the festival. The statement pointed out that local scholar Lei Kun Teng and local writer Tai Pei will talk about literature and film after the screening of “Warriors from the Magic Mountain”, while local director Chan Nga Lei and local film critics Leng Wu Chio and Lei Ka Hon will talk about the world of martial arts heroes, cowboys and samurais after the screening of the film Sukiyaki Western Django.
As part of the government’s COVID-19 pandemic prevention measures, all visitors entering the cinema must wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a valid Macau Health Code.
