An exhibition entitled “Nostalgia of Macau: Visible Memories” (澳門情懷: 看得見的記憶>) organised by The Photographic Society of Macau (PSM) (澳門攝影學會) is being held at the IAM Gallery.
According to the exhibition brochure, the event aims to guide visitors with old photos to discover the historical and cultural connection between themselves and Macau, a city where Chinese and Western cultures meet, and to look for their memories formed in the past and at present.
The exhibition mainly showcases Macau photos from the 1940s to the 1980s and includes several photos of the present cityscape so that visitors can compare the old and the new and notice the changes, according to the brochure.
Through a timeline of the cityscape changes over the past decades, the exhibition shows Macau’s old cityscape as well as people’s occupations in the past, allowing visitors to experience local people’s daily life in the past through different perspectives, the brochure points out.
Old photos are the most direct way for people to understand history, the brochure underlines. “A story-telling photo is more vivid than a polished article, and it enables people to immerse in the environment as if they were travelling back to the historical scenes,” the brochure points out, adding that each photo has a distinct story behind it. Besides reminiscing about the customs of the past, visitors can also learn from the city’s development and witness the momentous changes in Macau, according to the brochure.
The exhibition runs until October 10 in the ground-floor gallery at the IAM headquarters in Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro. It opens daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free.
Due to last week’s detection of a local case of a COVID-19 Delta variant family cluster, the venue has been temporarily closed. For enquiries, call PSM 2857 2770 or IAM 2833 7676.
