Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng has sent a congratulatory message to the Team China delegation at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for their “marvellous and sensational” achievements during the event, according to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS).

Ho sent the message on Sunday, the last day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

The GCS statement said that Ho represented the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) and its people in “extending feelings of utmost respect and sincere congratulations to the national athletes, for achieving glorious results, with many breakthroughs for Team China at the 32nd Summer Olympics.”

The nation’s athletes “displayed vigorously the spirit of the Olympics and the sporting spirit of China,” Ho wrote.

The national team won 38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze medals at the Summer Olympics.

Apart from the delegations from the Chinese mainland, the nation’s two other teams also won a number of medals in Tokyo: Chinese Taipei garnered two golds, four silvers and six bronzes. “Hong Kong, China” won one gold, two silvers and three bronzes.

The nation’s three teams won a total of 106 medals at the Games delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Macau is not a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“Such impressive results won great honour for the country, and for the people across the nation,” the statement quoted Ho’s message as saying.

“The athletes’ determination and endeavour to gain victory; their resilience and virtuoso skills, and the personal charisma displayed by the athletes in each sport, pulled at the heartstrings of the Macau public and thrilled everyone across the country. Their devotion to their task in the Olympic Games further spurred the patriotic passion of the Macau public, and excited the Chinese people living overseas,” Ho wrote in the message.

Members of the Macau public were “beyond proud” about the “momentous performance” of the national athletes, Ho wrote in the message, adding that Macau residents will learn from the sporting spirit of the national athletes, as well as learn from the athletes’ determination and steadfastness, as well as their strength and power to overcome challenges and push limits.

Ho also wrote that “such a spirit will further bind the Macau community as one, in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the promotion, with greater confidence, of adequate economic diversification, while advancing the implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle in Macau as part of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”

Ho also sent good wishes to Team China “for scaling new heights in sporting events, and for fighting for the glory of the country and of the Chinese people,” the statement said.
