An event entitled “China Shen Embroidery Art Exhibition” (中國沈繡藝術展), which is part of the ongoing Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021, is being held at the Macau Immigration Inspection Building of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

The exhibition is organised by Nam Kwong Cultural and Creative Industry Co. Ltd. and sponsored by Nam Kwong (Group) Company Limited.

According to a statement by the organiser, Shen embroidery is the theme of the exhibition which aims to promote traditional Chinese culture and the nation’s intangible cultural heritage, reflecting state-owned enterprises’ cultural responsibility.

Nam Kwong is the largest state-owned enterprise (SOE) based in Macau.

The exhibition area is divided into five units and two long scroll stands, featuring a total of 40 exquisite Shen embroidery works, some of them on loan from Shen’s Embroidery Museum (沈繡博物館) in Nantong, Jiangsu province.

The exhibits have been created by the second, third and fourth -generation disciples of Shen Shou (沈壽) who lived from 1874 to 1921. She was born in Wuxian county, nowadays known as Wujiang Mudu in Suzhou (今蘇州吳江木瀆), and later moved to Nantong (南通). The exhibits cover various themes such as Buddha images, landscapes, flowers, birds and animals, the statement underlines.

The long scroll work titled “Hundred Birds Worshipping the Phoenix” (百鳥朝鳳圖) is based on a painting by Shen Quan (沈銓), a court painter during the Qing Dynasty. It took three years for the Shen Embroidery National Gift Team (沈繡國禮團隊) to complete the work, which is 4.60-metres long, depicting about 300 birds with the help of delicate stitches and clear silk lines.

The exhibition is on display until October 23 at the arrival hall of the Macau Immigration Inspection Building of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The venue is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Admission is free. For more information, visit the website https://www.artmacao.mo/2021/en/event/8826

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, which was inaugurated on October 23, 2018 by President Xi Jinping, is the Greater Bay Area’s (GBA) largest public works project to date.
