Severe Tropical Storm Conson is forecast to move westwards across the South China Sea towards the vicinity of Hainan province and keep a distance of 600 kms from Macau, the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), which hoisted the Stand-by Signal No. 1 at 6 p.m. yesterday, said in a statement last night.

It said that the Signal No. 1 was expected to remain hoisted tomorrow.

According to the statement, the possibility of having to hoist higher tropical cyclone signals is relatively low, unless Conson moves towards a more northern track than expected or intensifies rapidly. Besides, the statement pointed out, Super Typhoon Chanthu is forecast to move from the northwest Pacific in the general direction of Taiwan.

The observatory also said that storm surge flooding was unlikely in Macau today.
