A local man was arrested for drunk driving on Thursday at Hengqin Port checkpoint for crashing into a police counter desk there earlier that day, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheuk Kou Chi said at a press conference on Friday.
The 30-year-old suspect surnamed Vong told the police that he is self-employed.
According to Cheuk, the Public Security Police received a report at around 3 a.m. on Thursday about a traffic accident in the departure lane of the checkpoint.
PSP officers went to the scene and questioned Vong. The officers noticed that Vong reeked of alcohol so they conducted a breathalyser test which showed that his alcohol concentration was 2.09 grammes per litre of blood.
Under questioning, Vong admitted that he had been drinking earlier that night in a bar in Zape. He took a taxi to a car park in Estrada Flor de Lótus to drive his car home via the Hengqin checkpoint. When Vong was about to drive out of the car park, he lost control of the car and crashed into a wall and an advertising hoarding. However, he did not report the matter and continued to drive towards Hengqin port.
When he drove into the checkpoint’s departure lane, he lost control again and crashed into the PSP counter desk there, but no one was injured.
Shortly after the incident Vong was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and a one-and-a-half year driving ban for drunk driving and evading responsibility.
Cheuk said that the repair costs of the damages to counter desk and car park were still being estimated, and the Public Security Police were following up on the case.
