Macau's observatory hoisted Typhoon Signal No. 8 at 6 a.m. today.
At 1 p.m., Tropical Cyclone "Lionrock" was located at about 460 km southwest of Macau, approaching Beibu Gulf, the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said.
Signal No. 8 means that a tropical cyclone continues to approach Macau. Winds with sustained speeds of 63 to 117 km/h are expected or blowing while gusts may exceed 180 km/h in Macau.
As the combined effect of Tropical Cyclone "Lionrock" and a northeast monsoon is stronger than expected, gale winds will occasionally affect Macao today, apart from frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms, the bureau said in a statement.
Due to the joint effect of today's astronomical high tide and strong winds, flooding is expected to hit the peninsula's Inner Harbor area tonight. However, the maximum flooding level is expected to remain below 0.5 metre.
After the hoisting of Signal No. 8 public transport has been suspended.
Meanwhile, the weather station warned that Tropical Storm "Kompasu" east of the Philippines is expected to move towards the Luzon Strait at the beginning of next week.
