Two men were arrested on Sunday for attacking a female staff member of a supermarket in the Barrier Gate area earlier that day, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement yesterday.

Public broadcaster TDM said that the two suspects are non-resident workers from the mainland.

According to the PSP statement, a video clip has been circulating on a social media app about a man attacking a female staff member in front of the supermarket in Estrada dos Cavaleiros.

The statement said that the Public Security Police received a report on Sunday night about the incident – two men about to enter the supermarket without facemasks refused to show their health codes. The female employee stopped them from entering, resulting in a quarrel breaking out. The men then suddenly attacked the woman and pushed over some items.

PSP officers rushed to the supermarket and took the two suspects to a police station for questioning. The statement said that the victim sustained head injuries and some goods were damaged by the suspects. The Public Security Police are following up on the case and the duo are facing charges of causing bodily harm and damaging property, according to the statement.

The Public Security Police urged citizens to follow the government’s COVID-19 prevention guidelines during the pandemic such as wearing facemasks and presenting their health codes when entering public places.
