A septuagenarian man was confirmed dead on Monday after falling from a height while carrying out waterproofing work in a building near Rua dos Mercadores earlier that day, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leung said in a statement this week.

According to Chong’s state- ment, the deceased and a fellow worker were carrying out water leakage prevention work on the second floor of a restaurant on Rua dos Mercadores on Monday. One of the workers heard a loud noise at about 5 p.m. and later discovered his workmate lying on the patio. The worker reported the case to the police.

The Labour Affairs Bureau said in a separate statement on Monday that the deceased was a local self- employed renovation worker. The bureau sent officials to the scene after the incident to investigate.

The officials discovered that the deceased was carrying out waterproofing work on the roof and fell from a height of about six metres onto the patio. The victim was certified dead at the hospital.

The bureau reminded the public that measures must be taken to ensure safety when working more than two metres above the ground, such as using a work platform and wearing safety harnesses to avoid accidents.
