The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) said in a statement yesterday that parents should warn their children against watching “inappropriate” TV series – such as “XX Games”.

According to the statement, the TV series in question –which the bureau failed to identify – is trending on the internet, depicting many violent, twisted and scary scenes. The bureau reminded the public that the series is not appropriate for all ages, especially not for children and teenagers, urging residents not to mimic the violent actions portrayed by the series.

The statement underlined that if the violent scenes have a psychological impact on the children and teenagers, it is the parents and schools’ responsibility to educate and counsel them about it.

The statement pointed out that online media and TV channels often show content that are not appropriate for children and teenagers, which could affect their psychological growth. The statement stressed that schools and parents should teach students and children how to differentiate whether the content is age-appropriate.

Moreover, the statement said that during class suspension and holidays, parents should pay more attention to their children’s internet usage and what kinds of content they are watching online. The bureau urged parents to use the “parental control” and “child restriction” settings or watch the programmes with their children to provide guidance.

If students are affected emotionally or psychologically after watching the TV series in question, the statement stressed, parents should contact their schools for assistance or call the bureau on 2840 1010 for counselling.

Apparently, the bureau statement was alluding to the immensely popular South Korean series “The Squid Games” which contains many violent scenes.
