A local man was arrested on Friday for stealing seven items of gold jewellery from a local shop and committing fraud, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chao Teng Hin said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The 30-year-old suspect surnamed Kam works as a salesperson.
According to Chao, the owner of a local gold jewellery shop reported to the police on Thursday that 14 items of gold jewellery had been stolen, resulting in a loss of approximately 40,000 patacas. The police discovered that Kam, who had been a part-time employee at the shop, had visited the shop on March 6 and March 11 pretending to be looking to purchase some gold items. It was then that he committed the theft.
The police apprehended Kam in a street in the central district on Friday. Under questioning, Kam admitted to stealing seven items of jewellery from the shop and pawning the stolen items for 13,300 patacas. He claimed that he had gambled away all the money.
Chao noted that the theft of the remaining seven pieces of jewellery required further investigation, and there may be accomplices involved.
According to Chao, Kam has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of theft and fraud.
