A man from the mainland was arrested on Monday for attacking his wife earlier that day, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said at a press briefing yesterday.
The 49-year-old suspect surnamed Lu told the police that he is a businessman. Lei said that Lu was arrested last December for robbing his wife with a prohibited weapon. However, his wife later decided not to press charges.
According to Lei, a local woman in her fifties reported to the Public Security Police on Monday that she was attacked by her husband at home in Rua do Almirante Costa Cabral earlier that day. PSP officers went to the flat to investigate and confirmed that the case involved domestic violence and thus referred the case to the Judiciary Police on the same day.
Lei said that the couple met in the mainland in 2017 and married last March there. Lu has a gambling habit. He came to Macau often with a family visit permit to gamble and stayed at the victim’s home. Lu told his wife on Monday morning that he wanted to go back to the mainland and asked her to give him 200 patacas in cash but she refused assuming that he would use the money to gamble.
Lei said that the couple quarrelled and Lu slapped his wife out of anger. He took out a stack of zodiac banknotes which his wife had kept under the bed and threw them out of the window. When the victim immediately called the police, Lu grabbed her smartphone and smashed it on the floor. A doctor later confirmed that the victim sustained bruises on her forearms and lips.
Lu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing domestic violence and property damage charges, according to Lei.
