The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that Macau has never imported frozen squid slices from Malaysia that tested positive for COVID-19.
According to the statement, Hong Kong’s health authorities announced on Wednesday that the city’s recent frozen sliced squid imported from Malaysia tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The statement said that the bureau immediately checked Macau’s import records and found that the city has never imported the affected frozen squid slices. The statement underlined that the bureau has also tested other frozen products imported from Malaysia, and they all tested negative for COVID-19.
The statement said that in order to prevent COVID-19 being passed via frozen goods, the bureau has been improving its novel coronavirus prevention and control measures on those products. The statement said that imported goods’ packaging must be sanitised and the products must test negative for COVID-19. The statement noted that the bureau collects around 250 environment or food samples daily and sanitises over 70,000 boxes of goods per week to ensure no imports carry any novel coronavirus.
The bureau pledged to inspect frozen goods storage facilities and retail outlets more frequently. The statement also said that the bureau and the Health Bureau (SSM) have set up contingency plans in case imported goods carry COVID-19.
