Ho vows to reinforce Zhejiang-Macau ties during Hangzhou visit

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, has met with senior officials of the Zhejiang provincial government in Hangzhou to exchange views on how to strengthen bilateral ties, the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement last night.

Ho paid a working visit to Hangzhou after attending the opening ceremony of the 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai last week.

The chief executive paid a four-day visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou which ended yesterday. Ho had been invited by the central government to attend the CIIE opening ceremony.

In Hangzhou, Ho had a meeting with the Yuan Jiajun who heads both the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Standing Committee of the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Congress

According to the GCS statement, Ho noted that Macau and Zhejiang enjoy close relations and cooperation and told his hosts that he’s looking forward to seizing joint development opportunities with Zhejiang and fostering reciprocal ties.

Ho said that matters relating to Hangzhou’s digital economy, smart city development and social governance were good reference points for Macau’s own development drive. Hangzhou’s experience in those fields would enable Macau and Zhejiang to have even deeper and broader cooperation for mutual beneficial development, the statement quoted Ho as saying.

Ho also talked about Macau’s effort in accelerating development of the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, saying that Macau is welcoming this major opportunity for further progress in socio-economic development.

Ho also gave a briefing on Macau’s COVID-19 control and prevention work. He spoke highly of Zhejiang’s novel coronavirus control and prevention effort, and the province’s latest achievements in socio-economic development.

Secretary Yuan said Zhejiang had stepped up efforts regarding high-quality development, and was committed to introducing technological reforms in order to optimise public services and the digital economy.

Yuan said during the meeting that Zhejiang and Macau have been enjoying close links for a long time. He underlined that the two sides see huge potential in economic and trade-related matters, and promotion of people-to-people exchanges. Yuan also said the two sides will strengthen cooperation and complement their respective advantages, aiming to serve the country’s overall development together.

While in Hangzhou, according to the statement, Ho visited a number of places, accompanied by Zhejiang government officials, such as a public service centre in Hangzhou, to get a better understanding of the city’s integrated platform for government services; the patriotism education demonstration base set up at Nanhu Revolutionary Memorial Hall; and the Red Boat, the site of the first National Congress of the CPC, to understand better the history of the founding and development of the Party.

According to the statement, Ho also paid a visit to a base for the “Hangzhou City Brain” system, to learn about the latest smart city development in Hangzhou. He also visited Hangzhou Urban Balcony, to get a better grasp of urban planning work in relation to enhancing people’s well-being; and Bin Fen Future Community in Binjiang district, to get a better understanding of a new model for community services designed to benefit the public and provide them with greater convenience.

The Macau government officials who joined the meeting and site visits in Hangzhou included Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon, and Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office Hoi Lai Fong.

Hangzhou, which has a population of 12 million, is the capital and most populous city of Zhejiang province, which has 65 million inhabitants.
