A local man was arrested on Monday for driving without a licence and driving under the influence (DUI) after hitting a female pedestrian in Avenida de Demétrio Cinatti in the Inner Harbour area and leaving the scene earlier that day, Public Security Police (PSP) Leong Chi Seng said at a press briefing yesterday.
The suspect in his twenties surnamed Wu told the police that he works as a deliveryman.
According to Leong, a Public Security Police patrol saw a woman in her twenties lying on the roadside in Avenida de Demétrio Cinatti on Monday morning. The woman told the police that she had been hit by a blue car and that her husband was chasing after the car. PSP officers found the car near the Patane Municipal Market where it was stopped by the victim’s husband.
Leong said that the driver (Wu), who was unable to show his driving licence to PSP officers, reeked of alcohol. The officers gave Wu a breathalyser test which showed that his alcohol concentration was 1.53 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood. The officers then took Wu to a police station for further investigation.
Under questioning, Wu admitted that he had been drinking in a bar in Zape earlier that day and borrowed the car from his friend to drive home. When he drove along Avenida de Demétrio Cinatti he heard some noise and thought he had just hit a lamp post so he drove on until he was stopped by a man (the victim’s husband) and finally realised that he had hit the woman.
The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). Wu faces charges of DUI, driving without a licence, hit and run, and causing bodily harm due to negligence, according to Leong.
