The University of Macau (UM) announced in a statement yesterday that a research article co-authored by UM scholar Aileen Lam Mei Mei entitled “Reframing Incentives for Climate Policy Action” was published in the top international journal Nature Energy.
According to the statement, Lam is an assistant professor in the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Yesterday’s statement pointed out that the journal has “an impact factor of 60.858” and publishes top research studies conducted on energy, adding that aside from the generation and distribution of energy, “the impacts of energy technologies and policies on different societies” are also explored. The statement noted that the article’s findings have also been underlined by The Guardian and The Moscow Times.
The statement pointed out that the article shows evidence that the transformation of energy systems is afoot, and “explores the economic and strategic implications of the emerging energy geography”. The statement added that the article presents an argument where positioning climate policy as economically damaging to those following it is a “poor description of strategic incentives” considering the economic inferences of the continuing energy transformation. The statement added that, instead, a new climate policy incentive arrangement arises where “fossil fuel importers are better off decarbonising, competitive fossil fuel exporters are better off flooding the market, and uncompetitive fossil fuel producers suffer from their exposure to stranded assets and lack of investment in decarbonisation technologies.”
The statement underlined that the study was authored by Jean-François Mercure, while co-authors who contributed to the study comprise Aileen Lam Mei Mei, Pablo Salas, Pim Vercoulen, Gregor Semieniuk, Hector Pollitt, Phil Holden, Negar Vakilifard, Unnada Chewpreecha, Neil Edwards, and Jorge Vinuales.
