A local man was arrested last week for cheating two local men out of 2,000 patacas last month on the promise that he would find jobs for them, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said at a press conference yesterday.
The 48-year-old jobless suspect is surnamed Lam.
According to Kam, the two men reported to the Public Security Police last Monday that they had been cheated by a man surnamed Lam out of a total of 2,000 patacas who claimed that he could find jobs for them. The victims told the police that one of them got to know Lam through WeChat on October 22. Lam claimed that he knew a casino department head and he could help find them jobs as drivers for the casino. However, Lam said that they were required to pay a total of 2,000 patacas as referral fees, and another 2,000 patacas after joining the company. The victims then met Lam in front of a bank branch in Patane district and paid him 2,000 patacas together with copies of their CVs as well as other personal documents. Afterwards, when the victims asked about their applications, Lam came up with different excuses again and again. The victims suspected that they had been defrauded and reported the case to the police.
Kam said that PSP officers scrutinised CCTV footage and located Lam’s whereabouts. The officers arrested Lam last week near his home in the Rotunda de Carlos da Maia (“Three Lamps”) district and found the two victims’ CVs as well as their personal documents at his home.
Under questioning, Lam admitted that he had cheated the duo. He told the police that he had had been out of a job for a long time so he defrauded the victims to earn some money, Kam said.
Lam was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) last Thursday, facing a fraud charge, according to Kam.
