The Macau Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) announced in a statement on Friday that it co-hosted the 5th International Conference on Events – Making Waves in Africa: Exploring New Frontiers in Festivals and Events that was held in Cape Town, being attended in “hybrid mode” by “over 130 South African and international delegates”.

According to the statement, the conference was hosted by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa, and was jointly co-organised by the institute, Bournemouth University, and the Rosen College of Hospitality Management of the University of Central Florida.

Owing to travel restrictions, the statement noted that the conference was conducted in “hybrid mode”, meaning that delegates attended the conference either online or physically, with attendees from 19 different countries and regions including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Germany, Ireland, Japan and Turkey, among others.

The statement pointed out that 17 presentations of research studies carried out by IFTM academics were delivered during the event, which included research from undergraduate and postgraduate students done in collaboration with faculty members, adding that the topics presented involved economic, social and environmental issues.

Speaking of the event’s relevance, IFTM President Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan said that the events industry was among the fastest growing and most important worldwide despite the challenges it has been presented with. She was quoted in the statement as saying: “It is therefore imperative that a dedicated conference on events is held periodically, bringing in world experts and specialists together to exchange ideas and latest research findings.”

The statement said that the institute’s involvement in the conference was essential in the development and recognition of event management worldwide as a specialty of the institute.

The statement underlined that the conference website can be visited at  www.makingwavesinevents.org, while enquiries can be made by contacting IFTM Professor Ubaldino Couto at dino@iftm.edu.mo.
