Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said yesterday that Macau is determined to further strengthen cooperation through the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin on scientific and technological innovation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA), the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement.

In addition, Ho said, the local government is committed to boosting scientific and technological innovation, in order to enhance the quality of its services and to advance people’s livelihoods and the economy.

Ho delivered a speech yesterday at the opening ceremony of the 2021 China Internet Media Forum, held in Guangzhou. The forum is jointly organised by the Cyberspace Administration of China, the China Media Group, and Guangdong’s cyberspace affairs commission.

At the ceremony, Ho underlined that the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, is calling for the development of a big data centre and an international innovation and technology hub. Ho said his government’s aim is to achieve sustainable development of science, technology and innovation, encourage enterprises to make greater use of technology in business operations and to upgrade their technology, and to ensure that Macau explores a market-orientated industry-academia-research model.

The chief executive also called for a lawful, orderly approach towards online resources. With the growing influence of the online media has come the need to stress their social responsibility and their need to act in a moral and legal way, rather than to focus merely on their own economic benefits, Ho said.

Ho also said that the Macau government will formulate a framework policy concerning online safety, in line with Macau’s overall development direction and practical needs. He said this was in order to promote wider community participation in maintaining online safety, and to raise the level of Macau’s overall online safety.

Ho arrived in Guangzhou for a working visit on Wednesday. That day, he officiated at the launch of the 4K-definition documentary “Crunch and Munch in Macau,” which has China Media Group as a co-producer. The documentary celebrates the 22nd anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland.
