A man from the mainland was arrested on Tuesday in Zape for selling drugs, with the police seizing from the suspect 6.46 grammes of cocaine with an estimated market value of 21,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) Ho Chan Nam said at a special press conference yesterday.

The 34-year-old suspect surnamed Liu told the police that he works as a driving instructor in the mainland.

According to Ho, the Judiciary Police received a tip-off recently that a male mainlander was selling drugs to night entertainment venues’ regulars in Zape. PJ officers identified Liu as the suspect and put him under surveillance. The officers arrested Liu early on Tuesday outside a hotel in Zape and seized 16 packets of cocaine weighing a total 6.46 grammes with an estimated market value of 21,000 patacas hidden in his hotel guestroom.

Under questioning, Liu admitted that he was hired by a drug gang to sell drugs in Macau, and that he had sold drugs for three days. He told the police that the senior gang members told him to go to different locations in Macau to collect drugs and sell them to customers in different places, mainly in night entertainment venues. Liu said that he got paid 1,000 yuan daily for three to four drug deals per day. He said that the drug money was collected by the senior gang members. At the time of the press conference yesterday morning, the Judiciary Police were still looking for other suspects as well as the source of the drugs, Ho said.

Liu was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing charges of selling narcotics and psychotropic substances, according to Ho.
